14th July 1991 to 9th August 1991 Elephant Pass (EPS) occupies a strategically vital position, the gateway linking the Jaffna peninsula to the Northern mainland. In 1991, the Sri Lankan military was in control of only two regions in the Jaffna peninsula: the High-Security Zone in Palaly and Elephant Pass.
